Get to Know Josh Kaplan, LCSW

Hi, I’m Josh Kaplan, and I’m glad you’re here. Working with individuals struggling with OCD and anxiety disorders is not just my specialty—it’s my passion. Having personally experienced the struggles of anxiety, I understand how overwhelming it can feel, and this has fueled my purpose to help others navigate their way to recovery.

As a therapist, I’m often described as calm, laid-back, and funny. I bring warmth and empathy to every session, paired with a direct and solution-focused approach. My goal is to guide you in becoming your own therapist, fostering independence and resilience throughout your recovery journey. While the work can be challenging, I do my best to make it more comfortable—using humor and adaptability to create an environment where progress feels possible.

I tailor my approach to meet the unique needs of each client, adjusting the pace and techniques to fit your personality and circumstances. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) provide a structured foundation, I view them as tools that require nuance and craftsmanship to meet you where you are.

Outside of work, I find joy in skiing, mountain biking, and adventuring, whether that’s exploring new trails or just enjoying the great outdoors. I’ve been happily married for many years, and I’m a proud parent to a wonderful teenage daughter who keeps life exciting.

If you’re ready to take the first step toward reclaiming your life, I’d be honored to support you on your journey. Together, we’ll tackle the challenges ahead with focus, empathy, and maybe even a little laughter.

"I believe in every individual’s ability to overcome life’s challenges, and I’m honored to walk alongside you on your journey. With evidence-based tools proven to work, we’ll face the difficulties together and build the confidence, resilience, and freedom you deserve."

Education and Experience

Education

I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University (2001) and earned my Master’s in Clinical Social Work from the University of Denver (2011), solidifying my foundational education in mental health care.

To further specialize, I completed advanced training in anxiety and OCD treatment through the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on evidence-based treatments, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Exposure Therapy,  and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This combination of education and specialized training has equipped me to provide expert care for individuals facing OCD and anxiety disorders.

Professional Experience

With 14 years of direct clinical experience in settings including private practice, group practice, and emergency mental health, I’ve dedicated my career to treating OCD and anxiety disorders with expertise and compassion. In addition to working directly with clients, I’ve also advised, trained, and managed therapists specializing in these complex conditions.

I’ve played a key role in shaping effective treatment approaches by guiding clinicians in implementing evidence-based therapies like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This experience has allowed me to ensure the highest standards of care for diverse client populations and to oversee a wide range of cases, from mild to severe.

My focus has been on building confidence in clinicians, fostering professional growth, and delivering meaningful outcomes for clients navigating the challenges of OCD and anxiety disorders. This depth of experience allows me to approach treatment with a thorough understanding of what works—and the dedication to help each individual achieve lasting recovery.

Contributions to The Ongoing Study and Awareness of OCD and Anxiety Disorders

I am proud to have contributed to OCD and anxiety disorder awareness and education through presentations at two International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) conferences. My presentations focused on two critical topics: Harm OCD, shedding light on its unique challenges and effective treatment approaches, and co-morbid Social Anxiety with OCD, emphasizing the nuanced interplay between these conditions and tailored intervention strategies.

These opportunities allowed me to share my expertise, promote understanding of these often-misunderstood experiences, and equip clinicians and individuals with actionable tools grounded in evidence-based practices like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Professional and State Required Licenses

I am pleased to have achieved professional licensure as an Independent Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), allowing me to practice independently in the following states: Colorado (09923340), Arizona (LCSW-21968), Nevada (11200-c), Utah (13617464-3501), Washington (LW61504162), New Jersey (44SC06321400), and Illinois (149.026731). Additionally, I hold the required professional liability insurance to provide therapy in all these states, ensuring I meet the highest professional and legal standards for practice.
